Font Pairing

Assignment 7

Assignment 3
Assignment 4

Assignment 1

What does it mean to create a font pairing?

Font pairing is the manipulation of font appearance to catch the eye of the viewer. Font pairing incorporates a technical font, color, and size choice and the words must be places in a visually appearing way. Font Pairing can be used for logos, banners, or advertisements. What are the four assignments you chose to do?

Write the name of the assignment and describe your design for each.

I chose assignments 1, 3, 4, and 7. In design 1, I made the words “what”, “comes”, and “easy” a simple font with serifs in a cool gray to draw attention to the big, inorganic words— “easy” and “last.” In design 3, I decided to pick one of my favorite destinations—Beverly Hills. This city is known to be lavish and classy, so I picked a grand font that represents sophistication for the words “Beverly Hills,” but for the word “California” I chose a simpler font, yet still with enough personality. In design 4, I chose a classic quote from Coco Chanel that addresses the beauty of simplicity, so I decided to implement a pearl necklace that represents simplicity, tradition, and elegance. I decided to emphasizes the word elegance by using a script font. I kept the font color black to keep the visual traditional and subtle. In design 7, I incorporated shades or brown and a light peach to bring out a vintage feel. I picked a bicycle visual to add to the mood, but didn’t want to take away from the words, so I made the opacity lower.

Which assignment would you say is your BEST font pairing and why?

My best font pairing was design 4, because of the graphic and word coordination. I strongly believe that the colors, font choice, and size match the mood of the picture and the meaning of the quote.

Which assignment would you say is your Least Successful font pairing and why?

My least successful design was 1 because it was hard being limited to only two fonts and no background. I think that the white space looks too empty.

How would you describe the font pairing process? What makes a font pairing so difficult?

The font pairing process requires deep thought— one must make sure the appearance speaks to the same value of what the meaning is; the appearance must match the message that the lines, quotes, or phrases are portraying. Font pairing is difficult because the goal is to make the appearance eye catching and original, but in the same time have the ability convey a message in an understanding manner.
