Holiday Bag Design for Barneys
How do you believe your design relates to the corporate Identity of your company?
I believe that my bag matches the upscale identity of my company. Barneys is a high end department store that retails clothing, shoes, jackets, jewelry, and other fashion goods. Their bag is originally a plain all charcoal bag with their logo in white in the center. I kept their original layout which is the logo placed in the center atop the charcoal background; I also made the logo a smaller size just like the original bag. I also found a font and color that matched the consistency of the text.
2. How does your bag portray the “holiday”?
I kept the charcoal background from Barneys original logo but I incorporated a holiday accent. I took inspiration from a candy cane- I made a candy cane background my applying white stripes proportionality in a diagonal to a red background. I then placed the charcoal background atop the candy cane. Finally, I placed Barneys’s logo. Candy canes are a symbol of the holiday season, so when this bag is seen on someone’s shoulder, the viewer will be attracted to its elegance which informs them that there might be gifts sold here for this time of year, by noticing the candy cane.
3. Do you think that the company you designed for would really use your bag? Why or why not?
I believe so. My bag keeps the company’s sensation and colors- white and charcoal. I added a deep, scarlet red that emphasizes the charcoal. The company portrays a simple bag with no text other than their logo and no graphics no matter what holiday it is. So, I did not opt for a graphic or symbol but rather an elegant print that was driven from a Christmas classic-candy cane.
4. What makes your bag Unique and Different?
My bag is unique because I blended classy with casual. Barneys is an upscale, sophisticated brand with a sleek logo while the candy cane design is a well-known holiday pattern. I also believe that my bag is simple in the sense that the text is small, there is no graphic, and the color contrasts are not overwhelming to the eye. It is different because it is uncomplicated that gives off a effortless look which is what Barneys provides women- the idea and access to looking classy and elegant in an effortless way.
5. Describe the process in which you took to create the bag? (From beginning to end).
First, I chose a company that I admire and am familiar with. Then I looked up the logo and traditional bag. I was reassured that the bag takes on a simple design with an appealing finish. It seemed glossy and the paper that I printed on also appeared shiny and luminous. I decided to sketch an idea. My first design had the Barneys logo on top of a half charcoal and half red background. After some research and thought, I decided to add holiday elements- lights and candy cane. I put a string of lights under the logo but I realized it made the appearance too complicated and didn't match the identity. I only put candy cane because it had a deep red which added classiness. Then I placed the red background on the template and added white diagonal stripes to it in a diagonal; I made sure they were equally spaced. Then I put the charcoal background and the logo in white. I printed on a glossy paper and assembled the bag by following guidelines. I chose white, think string for the handle because it added to the effortless, simple touch of the company. The light of the white on the handles complemented the darkness of the charcoal.
