Card Design

How does the design that you created demonstrate your knowledge of playing card design?

I implemented my knowledge of playing cards by ensuring a color shame for all cards. I went for a pastel finish to match a cooking/baking playing card theme. I also kept symmetry in mind when I designed the king card. I tried to incorporate cupcakes and other baking elements on all cards to tie them in together; also the same colors were used throughout.

How would the rest of the deck look? What would you do for the other picture cards? Please describe in detail?

For the rest of the deck, I would sustain the baking theme with incorporation of other cooking/baking elements like spoons, cakes, mixers, and other ingredients while still keeping the same color scheme with the light, marble-like background. For spades, clubs, and diamonds, I would probably use baking elements while for the picture cards, I would use people. For the spades, clubs, and diamonds, I would put the amount of pictures to match the number; for example, if it is 4 of clubs, I would put 4 spoons or a 4 layer cake. For the picture cards, I would design the Queen to be a female chef or baker, since I used a male one for the king, and for the Jack I could also use a person who cooks but not to the same level as a chef, but maybe a mother or a child cooking because the Queen and King are worth more and their graphics have to match their significance.

How does your design demonstrate your knowledge of adobe illustrator?

My card design very clearly showcases my knowledge of illustrator since I played around with opacity layers and overlapping layers and ordering the way that I thought was most visually appealing. I maintained similar colors through all cards. I also used image trace and live paint to color specific parts within one graphic.

What do you feel was the most challenging part of this project and why?

The most challenging part was choosing graphics. Some graphics which seemed right at first, actually did not match the color scheme or the other elements on the card. But once I found the proper graphics, I followed the color scheme, and it all came together. The number card was also a little tricky, because at first it seemed plain, but I added small elements like cupcakes and strokes with really brought the finest-finest finishing touch.

If you can change one requirements what would it be and why?

I would change the theme requirement. I would have much rather designed cards based on a theme I like or one that I know a lot about. For example, I really wanted the celebrity theme because I love Hollywood and I keep up with designers and fashion revolving celebrities, so I would be excited to work on these cards. I would incorporate famous people I like along with celebrity elements like clothes or jewelry. It would also save time this way as I would already have ideas in mind rather than spending a few days just to understand what the theme is and find graphics and actually contemplate what the root of the theme is.
